Jack had been anticipating this arrival for several days now, ever since they had learned that a specialist would be coming aboard. Lieutenant Trinin's slide into depression and melancholia had gotten progressively worse and considering all he had done for the ship all the stops were being pulled to make sure he got only the best care that could be had whether inside or outside of Starfleet. Baylon was one of the few who had been stationed on the Hades since its launch, hell if anyone aboard was a personification of the ideals and values of the ship it would be him. When he had been taken off active duty by Counsellor Ripley the captain had been quick to notify command that she wanted someone aboard who could manage the situation and see to it that he returned to form. Dr. Mias had been on Betazed, had been for some time as Jack understood it but the reply to Straton's request had come through within a matter of hours, a specialist had been contacted who had agreed to help. Whether this was a testament to Starfleet or the doctor he didn't know or even whether there were extenuating circumstances. The Hades had been at Geneva for some time undergoing repair and maintenance as well as taking on supplies and updated equipment along with the training on them the crew required. Word was that Dr. Mias had arrived within the hour and checked in with command before coming over. Anyway, considering the situation he had decided to accompany Lo'ren to the transporter room to meet this remarkable man as soon as he came aboard. "I have the coordinates inputted sir. Transporter lock initiated. Geneva has confirmed their readiness to begin transport. " Jack glanced over at him quickly. "Energize." The transporter cycled up to full power with a rising hum, the sparkling motes quickly coalescing into a human form then solidifying. The form on the pad was clad in a robe of the most brilliant white imaginable but that was probably the least eye catching thing about him if that can be believed. Standing just an inch or two short of six feet he had a full mane of silver hair that fell behind his shoulders to the small of his back into which was cunningly woven a plethora of small silver charms. His face was round and jovial and sporting an engaging smile. The robe extended down to his ankles, beneath which could be seen worn leather sandals with braids of leather resting atop his feet, into these leather braids more silver charms had been woven. Riven was sixty five years of age but didn't look it, not in the least. He was well fit for his age except for a slight paunch at his waist which was hidden by his robe and his face was unlined. The only thing that really gave a sign of age was his hair of course, it had taken a number of years for him to grow it to such a length and maintain it there. His mind was already tasting the mood of the ship as it came into view and what he sensed was not what he had predicted or to be more precise what he had hoped not to find. He had been aboard the Hades at the time of its inception and served aboard her during the war, being transferred from it to the USS Potomac afterwards to search for lost or marooned survivors. When he had left this ship the crew had been weary and battle fatigued but in remarkably good spirits considering what they had been through. His mind was tasting much worse though now, an acrid current of anxiety, anger and thinly suppressed frustration. It swirled all around him, threatening to soak into his being but he kept it firmly at arms length. In a word it could be summed up in this, he was currently standing on a 'sad' ship. His sparkling gaze travelled over the two officers who were facing him with wide eyes, his appearance always sparked that kind of interest and it was meant to do so. His image had been carefully cultivated since his early, formative years in the temple of the goddess on Betazed. Hailed as a child of the goddess and possessing powerful abilities which he had been trained to harness he had put them to work for the greater good of all as he had been taught and for many years now had been hailed as one of if not the greatest of the mind healers on Betazed, whether now or in the dim reaches of the past. His telepathic and empathic talents had always been extremely, almost dangerously potent should there be a break in his control, even more so since the mission the Mystique had made to a small and inhabited planet. The radiation they had found there had given formerly non-telepaths abilities for a short time and had enhanced those of the telepaths on the away team including his own. Over the years since that encounter the enhanced abilities had faded to a great extent but not entirely. While not in formal dress, Lo'ren could sense that this man deserved formality in the extreme. He radiated importance. She could also bet that he didn't want it, but could command it in an instant - or turn the mental mindscape of a room as dark as night without trouble. She held herself at full attention as she took in his riveting gaze and dazzling smile. "Dr. Mias, welcome aboard the Hades - or shall I say welcome back? I've heard some interesting stories amongst the crew since they became aware that you are returning. I am the CTac/Sec, Ensign Lo'ren T'Vof and this is our First Officer and CSO, Lieutenant Jericho Haynes." Lo'ren indicated Jack with her right hand slightly forward and towards Jack. Riven gave her a dizzying smile as he stepped to the edge of the pad, as he moved the small crystals embedded in the fabric of his robe caught the light and glinted with a dazzling array of colours. His motion was not without sound either, the charms woven into his hair and those on his sandals chimed merrily with each step. "Thank you for your generous welcome Lo'ren. And I must insist you call me Riven." He said warmly as he moved forward and took her hands in his own, his mind shielded with an iron control. Bending slightly he kissed the uppermost one then released them and stepped back a half-step. This woman had a Vulcan heritage as could be seen by her eye-catching ears as well as the feel he had sensed of a shielded mind. There was a mixture of heritage there as well though, the ridges upon her nose hinting at Bajoran stock, not to mention the d'ja pagh she wore. He had instantly sensed a connection also however and followed it with his eyes to the man standing beside her who had turned in shock at what he might have seen as a naked advance. Lo'ren flushed slightly, she wasn't familiar with or much fond of such intimate contact with anyone except Jack and yet there was a part of her that couldn't help but feel exhilarated at the treatment. She caught Jack's strong emotional reaction and Riven's eyes tracing the connection. As the mind-healer dropped her hands, she reached out with her left hand and snaked two fingers around Jack's first two fingers on his right. She'd felt the brush of the strong highly disciplined mind against hers and so knew that Riven knew. She also guessed that he didn't stand on ceremony. All pretences dropped, she wanted to allay her love's fear and protective anger. She squeezed the fingers she'd snatched and made it clear to him that her emotions were for him alone. "Thank you Riven, and you have made that particular connection quickly." It was obvious enough to the Hades crew now and so she wasn't worried about hiding it from the perceptive mind of the Betazoid healer. "Captain Straton asked that we give you the opportunity to take a tour if you wish, and direct you to your quarters before we take you to meet Lt. Trinin if that's alright with you?" "Of course!" Riven could sense the first officer relax and saw the frown leave his face as suddenly as though he had been doused in cold water, he gave Jericho a joyous smile as well. "However as much as I want to meet the crew I'm in no hurry. I am happy to meet you Jericho." Riven held out his left hand and gripped Jack's with it and gave him a hearty shake. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Geneva orbit- USS Hades- Transporter Room 2 - CTac/Sec Lo'ren T'vof, FO/CSO Jericho Haynes and Dr. Riven Mias- 1203) Jack's outrage had evaporated instantly as Lo'ren had taken his hand and he was struck again by the force of Dr. Mias' personality as he gave hand a firm handshake. ~My god! The stories about him do not do him justice!~ "The name's Jack not Jericho. I ... er.... It's good to meet you Lieutenant ... er... Doctor Mias." Riven gave him an emphatic shake of the head. "No, no it's Riven, not Lieutenant and not Doctor. Let's skip the formality shall we sir?" He chuckled at his own sarcasm. "My 'orders' clearly state I am here informally, attached to the ship as a civilian adviser though Starfleet is bad about needing to pigeonhole everyone and establish protocols. I expect nothing less than working on a first name basis and if you try to hold me to the formalities I assure you, you will have to throw me in the brig, irons or some other such contraption." he pulled a small padd from a pocket of his robe and handed it to Jack. "I can give you a brief synopsis if you'd like, Dr. Riven Mias, read Riven here, mind healer retired from the fleet as senior counsellor although I never technically joined except informally to provide my services. On board to provide my expertise to the senior counsellor in the matter of Lt. Baylon Trinin and others affected by a recent mission. Now do we have a working agreement?" Jack nodded, more than a little flabbergasted at the man's manner. It wasn't standard protocol but this wasn't your normal shipmate either. "Well Riven I'm sure Counsellor Ripley will to happy to hear you are on board." He couldn't help a twinge of guilt at the mention of her name and the effect the title had on him, he still hadn't apologized to her at the brusque manner he had used when first meeting her in the holodeck with Haywood and was having a hard time bringing himself to do so. Riven had detached from his hand and was waving a finger in his face in mock anger. "Now let's not go there!" "What do you mean?" Jack asked, suddenly confused. "This hostility you have toward counsellors, no doubt well earned in a past experience but I assure you misplaced!" Jack looked at him in shock for an instant. "Are you..." "Reading your mind?" Riven pantomimed a start of surprise. "Yes..." "Why of course not!" The mind healer then gave him an infectious grin. "But I am a sensitive empath and you fairly screamed it at me when you said counsellor. I could hardly have missed it even had I been trying not to." Jack's eyes got a bit wide at that, he would have to watch himself very closely around this man. He was trying to think of a retort when Lo'ren deftly changed the subject. “The crew could do with a bit of healing, our morale has been off normal for some time. Lt. Trinin is just the visible sign of the underlying illness.” Lo'ren cast her eyes downward, shielding her mind only enough so that she wasn't broadcasting right across the ship, it wasn't enough – she'd already figured that out – to block Riven Mias should he decide he needed to know the full state of her mind. She continued with the informal morale report. Riven's eyes narrowed as he sensed her reinforcing the shields on her mind, not that he would have pried, that would be a serious breach of his own ethics not to mention the telepathic moral laws. He never initiated telepathic contact on someone averse to the procedure and when dealing with a 'visitor' to his office only after he had asked permission. Though she was a touch telepath he could see that she was very private about her mind and her wishes would be respected. “We've gone through a hell that was, to say the least, unexpected. We lost Captain Sash – to us - only a few months ago and then we were hit by a phenomenon that throws us ahead five years and we get treated like spies and saboteurs. Almost all of the crew has experienced significant personal losses.” Lo'ren sidestepped towards Jack with those last words, taking comfort that he was there and hoping that Riven wouldn't pry into her own personal loss. It still smarted something fierce to remember her father and she didn't want to lose control while on duty. ~Perhaps I will ask him for some of his time and maybe, if he has the time, to give me some training.~ "Quite understandable then." He nodded. "Thank you for your candour." The fact she had quite clearly stated 'we' rather than 'the crew' was not lost on him. "I assure you I understand completely and am always available to any of the 'crew' who would wish to speak with me." he gave her a conspiratoral wink then. "By the way..." he looked approvingly over them both. "You make a quite stunning couple." he gave Jack another one of those brilliant smiles. I assure you I am quite envious." Jack just shook his head in wonder at the man's outrageous behaviour, one couldn't help but to like him despite or was it because of it? "Well if you don't mind then doctor ... I mean Riven I am sure Lo'ren would like to show you around and I need to get back to my duties." He gave Lo'ren's hand a squeeze and a her a soft smile. ::Watch out for this guy, he looks like a real lady's man.:: He chuckled mentally. ::I wouldn't want him to turn your head.:: She mocked surprise back at him in her thoughts, ::You think he can begin to compete with you? Sorely mistaken I'm sure.:: Riven waited patiently as they exchanged conversation mentally, aware of it but not prying. ::We'll meet for lunch after you show him around.:: She squeezed back gently and replied, ::Absolutely, see you soon.:: Looking back to Riven he said. "It was good meeting you Riven, I'm sure we will get a chance to talk later." With that and a last look at his love he turned and left the transporter room. Lo'ren sighed as she turned back to Riven, the dip in their connection was palpable just after they stopped physical contact, but she could still sense Jack's wild bewilderment at this exuberant Betazoid. She grinned and laced her hands behind her back, "Well, Riven. How about that tour?" "Of course." He said as he followed her from the room. "I would love a tour.. I know my way around the ship but I see the roster has changed dramatically since I was here last. The Hades has always seemed to attract the most beautiful tactical officers in the fleet. The last time I was here Ranae was the chief in the department and I hear she has moved onward." He paused for a heartbeat. "Speaking of former senior officers how is Angeni? I believe she is still here is she not?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Geneva orbit- USS Hades- Deck 5, Corridor - CTac/Sec Lo'ren T'vof and Dr.. Riven Mias- 1206) Her eyebrow raised slightly at the compliment and she could see why Jack was a little more possessive than usual, but she didn't rise to the bait - much. "Thank you, I never had the pleasure of meeting Miss Ammon, so I couldn't compare. As for Ang, yes, she is still here. We can stop by Sickbay as part of the 'tour'." Riven grew silent for an instant as they walked before saying softly. "Yes, thank you very much, I'd like that. She is such a lovely and vivacious young woman. It would be nice to speak with her again." He wondered silently whether she had gotten over her past experiences yet, the death of her parents and the other insecurities that had haunted her, despite his best efforts he had never been able to help her get through some things though they had talked a great deal in his office. He was only one man after all and hardly perfect but she had been perhaps his most resounding failure. Lo'ren smiled, "A most vivacious woman indeed." Lo'ren framed her words carefully, looking for the language that would help Riven, but not interfere with Angeni's possible desires. "I have enjoyed her company on several occasions. When she, Lt. Wright and Captain Sash were kidnapped I worried for her safety." ~And now I continue to worry for her.~ Lo'ren thought for a moment before deciding what to say next. “I notice things, I spent several years studying linguistics before I joined Starfleet. I'm sure you know that high level linguists often get diplomatic training.” "Outstanding!" He grinned as he stepped up his pace, moving slightly ahead of her even as he kept his attention trained on her, his eyes never leaving her face for long. "It comes in handy when trying to talk to a completely unknown culture I am sure and makes things much easier when dealing with them. I'd imagine a tatical officer in training for further command possibilities would find it highly rewarding. It would give you a step up on your advanced training regimen." She nodded in agreement as she let him set the pace, “It serves me well at Tactical, I'd much rather talk someone down in their own language before I have to shoot a weapon out of their hands or disable their ship, and translation matrices never seem to get all the nuances.” Didn't that bring back memories! Like the Hiren Pattia, the sentient computer controlled station created by the Founders. Such insights might have saved them a lot of grief in their earlier dealings with her and perhaps ... just perhaps might have later saved Vanyssa's life when confronted by her insane fellow life form. "Those gifted with linguistic abilities have long been highly valuable to exploration and first contact. I find this fascinating! Are there any other gifted officers aboard the ship with intriguing linguistic capabilities you find interesting?" Lo'ren couldn't help but wonder how much of a handful Riven would have been as a child in training, his train of thought was more like a butterfly – flitting from one thing to the next while still managing to be wholly captivating. the corners of her mouth tugged into a smile again and again at the thought. “Interesting officers? Well, I'm not sure if she was here when you were last aboard. Arysha Tethlin – Completely Deaf and a computer engineering genius. And I find Lieutenant Shayhiloosh very interesting – I tried learning the Arborian language, speaking it is beyond my ability but I can respond passably in standard to what is said to me in Arborian.” They waited in front of the turbolift doors for a moment and then stepped in. Lo'ren quickly shot off "Deck 10" and the car began to hurtle them through the ship. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Geneva orbit- USS Hades- Turbolift - CTac/Sec Lo'ren T'vof and Dr. Riven Mias- 1209) He laughed, a rich melodic sound as the turbolift started up. "I remember Shayhiloosh, s/he is a most fascinating creature. And of course Maraht, now there is a being cut from a different cloth but as loyal and intelligent as the day is long. I hope he is doing well." She nodded, "He's been quite busy with his OPS Chief duties, so I haven't seen that much of him unless we share bridge shifts. Another interesting fellow, and I'm not certain I could duplicate his true speach patterns - I was planning on asking him to teach me to understand, but with the amount of work he's had I haven't had the heart to add to his load." Riven smiled as he shook his head. "I believe his people use electromagnetic frequencies to communicate, as perceptive as you are I believe that leaves our kind somewhat short in the sensory organs needed speak with them in their own language." He chuckled at that. Lo'ren again raised her eyebrow, chuckling - she'd wondered about that, “Don't be so sure, these Vulcan ears are fairly sensitive to vibration. But I have been thinking about something else, and it's apparent to me that it needs addressing. I was thinking that I would like to see about some mind training with you. The Vulcan Masters never quite knew what to do with me because I refuse to leave my emotions behind. Baylon managed to help me some before he shut down, but I feel that I could learn more.” -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Geneva orbit- USS Hades- Deck 10, Corridor - CTac/Sec Lo'ren T'vof and Dr. Riven Mias- 1211) Riven was out of the Turbolift before Lo'ren could blink and she lengthened her stride to catch up. He slowed his pace to allow her to walk beside him. "I see, yes..." his voice trailed off before rising again. "Vulcans are a wonderful culture but are limited in some ways because they refuse to acknowledge an emotional capacity, someone carrying such would be an enigma to them it stands to reason." His face which had gone somber for an instant lit up. "I'd love to have you come by and see what we can do, I'm sure we can make some headway on your control. You are of course welcome to my office any time you would like to visit." She inclined her head graciously, "Thank you, I'll take a look at my schedule and see about a good time." "I'm assuming then your Bajoran heritage has played a role in this but I won't pry into your private life if you do not wish for me to do so. Anything you would like to tell me will of course be held in the strictist confidence." He hushed as they passed a knot of crewmembers who were gathered around a doorway, after they had been left behind he continued. "The more I know though of those things the more I might be able to help but don't think I'm trying to get you to tell me now. When you're ready for more advanced training you need only drop by, I don't stand on ceremony and don't demand people stick to a schedule though it sometimes helps the visitor more than it does me. I love to have guests drop by." "Well, when you work on a starship, schedules are hard to leave behind." Lo'ren laughed, even as a thought occurred to her, "I suppose as Chief I have a bit of leeway in that however. I can make someone else do it." She smiled. ~Still not used to the nuances of a senior position. Ah well, with time.~ "And of course Jack is welcome as well." He laughed again. "Though I got the distinct impression it might take a great deal of thought on his part before he gets around to it. So how long have you known each other or is that prying?" She chimed in to his laughter, glad that there were no hard feelings - at least from Riven - and that the Betazoid had a pretty good idea of Jack's personality. "Jack is... not fond of counsellors. I haven't pried about that much myself, so I couldn't divulge it even if I wanted to. As far as how long we've been together..." she flushed slightly, "a few months." ~And hopefully a lot more in the future.~ She pursed her lips in mock warning as she finished off her words, "Anything more is prying, at least outside of a proper session." He nodded. "I plan on visiting Baylon today though I don't want to rush in on him, I'll call first to see if he's ready. It's been quite some time since I've seen him. Being familiar with me should set him at ease but you can't rush people before they're ready." He glanced over at her. "Since you work in the same department with him and are his superior officer I assume you are very familiar with him, you also told me you had done some mental disciplines with him, is there any insight you might care to give me?" Lo'ren considered this, she'd really only been Baylon's 'superior' for a few weeks. It was strange that she had literally displaced him, such a capable officer. She took a slow breath as she divulged what she thought she could, "I've been working closely with Baylon in Tactical and Security since I came on board. Until recently he was my superior in the department. He's tried to hold together, but especially since we time-jumped he's spiralled into severe depression. I can't claim to be a counsellor, so I won't begin to try and diagnose beyond that. What I do know is that he was the last of our crew to see Captain Sash alive, and I think he took it hard." "Ah!" He mused for a second. "I assume he was doing well before this?" Lo'ren assented to this information, "You assume corrently, Baylon was hale and healthy before that event. I find it quite disconcerting to see him as he is now - and some of the security staff have expressed their concern having noticed the same timeline." He nodded at her reply, not speaking his thoughts. Her mouth turned sideways in a wry half-smile, "As for the mental discipline, he was able to show me some Ullian mind exercises that he'd learned. Before that I was a mental wrecking ball. Jack had to live through some of my nightmares." She chuckled at the thought of her love rushing through the corridors in his housecoat, even if the reason wasn't quite as funny in retrospect. He smiled encouragingly, letting her know he was completely listening. Telepathic bleedover between bonded couples was common when one was having difficulties with their control. "That is not an unusual occurance." "I'd rather not get into it all here, let's just say the Occupation of Bajor wasn't terribly good to me while Jack, Baylon and the Hades have been." She dropped it like a stone and shored up her mental walls again, it would do no good to have a relapse of her mind flashes now - except that Riven would have a clear view of what her mental state could be. ~Not now.~ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Geneva orbit- USS Hades- Deck 10, Corridor - CTac/Sec Lo'ren T'vof and Dr. Riven Mias- 1213) He looked away politely as she shored up her mental barriers but it hadn't stopped the emotions she was projecting completely, even after she had strengthened her control there was still a residue escaping. It wouldn't have been perceived much farther than he was standing perhaps except by a very perceptive empath ... such as himself. She didn't want to talk about it at the moment and so he would leave it for now, there would be plenty of time to talk about her experiences later. And they would have to be discussed, they were at the very root of the difficulties in control she had been experiencing according to his experience. The past is the foundation of today, only after the foundation was strengthened could the present be stabilized. Only after she had restored a measure of control did he turn his eyes back to her. She calmed herself sufficiently and looked him squarely in the eye, "As you can see, I still struggle. Between that and some out of the ordinary instinctual abilities... at least I think they're out of the ordinary," Lo'ren let her confusion and uncertainty play across her face, "at least for Vulcans, even half-Vulcans." She shrugged, unsure of how to continue. He gave her another encouraging smile. "I would like to examine them then when you visit me if you will give your permission." Lo'ren decided that if she really wanted to improve her skills she would have to push beyond her comfort zones, "Yes, perhaps you can help me decipher just what happened and how to properly control myself so I don't endanger myself or anyone else." Instinctively he turned his head and noted that they were almost to sickbay, he stopped before they reached it and moved to stand near the bulkhead, letting her know without words that he had time if she wished to continue their conversation. Noting his stance and the fact that they'd literally stopped in the corridor, Lo'ren took a deep breath and stood at ease with her hands behind her back - letting herself be vulnerable on purpose was not something she did lightly. "What worries me most is how my control affects Jack - he's First Officer, I don't want to incapacitate him accidentally with my own ineptitudes. I very nearly did it once." He nodded his head in understanding. "I promise you, you will see a profound difference by the time we are through and we can begin anytime you would like." She shook her head, "As much as I would like to monopolize your time, I have duties to attend to, you have a ship to re-familiarize yourself with and a patient to greet, not to mention a few officers who would like to greet you." She handed him a PADD with his accomodation information and other pertinent things to know, "You'll find everything you need aside from the bodies to counsel in this. As for the bodies, you could talk to Ana." He took the padd with a smile and a nod. "I will check in with her shortly, thank you." She laughed again, "I will be around soon, I assure you. Jack may be another story, but I am eager to do what I need to so I can be a better person and a better, more reliable officer." "I will take that as a promise and be assured I will not let you rest until you do so." He grinned. With that Lo'ren turned and headed back to the turbolift as she left off a parting word, "I kind of like Jack in green." She smiled impishly to herself as she went about her work. ~In green?~ It hit him in an instant and he was laughing as he stepped to the sickbay door, wondering if Angeni was currently there. He could ask the computer but why bother when he was already here. Taking a breath he stepped up to them and then through. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2413.10.23 (USS Hades, Observation Lounge, CO Captain Eva Straton, 10:30) With the ship at warp and on course toward their next mission, Eva had called a senior officers meeting to brief the staff on what they could expect. She walked into the Lounge right at 10:30 and moved to the head of the table and called the meeting to order. "Your attention please," She said, "Before we get to departmental status reports, I would like to brief you on our next mission. As this mission is purely scientific in nature, I have asked Lt. Haynes to brief us all on the details of this mission." She turned toward Lt. Haynes and nodded. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- end compile
